Friedrich Dürrenmatt: "Romulus the Great"
Romulus,
the last emperor of Western Rome, remains unperturbed by the attack of
the Germans on his empire. He has – to the great regret of
empress and ministers – not the state affairs, but an
entirely other matter near to his heart : Romulus is an enthusiastic
chicken breeder!
The
original German text of this wonderful comedy about the decline of the
Roman Empire often stood the test in school performances – a play
full of slapsticks and running gags, but also with parts inciting to
think about history.
Why
the students of Latin should not take a pleasure in a Latin translation
of this play – in the language of the time at which it is set?
A detailed glossary helps to overcome all difficulties of vocabulary.
